8 Interior Designer Tips for a Bedroom Makeover

Your bedroom is your sanctuary, the comfortable heart of your home. But does it feel that way? You need some bedroom makeover ideas if you don’t get an immediate sense of peace and calm when you enter this space.

Interior designers have simple, yet elegant, solutions that transform these spaces, creating a warm, intimate ambiance. Even better, many of these DIY bedroom makeover ideas require minimal effort but produce maximum impact. Here are some techniques that give your bedroom a fresh, and refreshing, new look.

1. Out with the old

Before incorporating any interior decorating tips, you need to clean and declutter. Clearing your bedroom of items that are outdated, broken or in need of repair gives you a better idea of what you have to work with and what you need to purchase. Streamlining your space also creates a feeling of airiness and spaciousness

2. Keep calm and carry on

You want to create a soothing, relaxing environment as you reimagine your bedroom design. That may mean moving your TV out of the room so you’re not distracted by exposure to blue light, which can make it difficult to fall asleep. Or you may add an essential oil diffuser for its aromatherapy benefits. If, after decluttering, you realize that your belongings tend to pile up around your room, find a lovely bench, chest or decorative baskets that can double as storage to keep things neat and tidy.

3. Get things moving

Don’t be afraid to move furniture around to try something new. Move your bed to the other side of the room. Add a vanity table near your window to take advantage of natural light. Create a “room within a room” by adding a reading nook or two slipper chairs to a corner of your bedroom, a great master bedroom makeover idea that takes advantage of any extra space and makes it functional. If you don’t like how the new space looks, it’s easy to move the furniture back in its original position.

4. Shift into neutrals

A neutral color scheme creates a sense of tranquility, one that’s pleasing to the eye. There’s an array of neutral shades you can choose from, but designer Michael Wolk likes white. “The crisp, clean look of an all-white bedroom is completely unique depending on what types of furniture you choose,” he says. “Choosing a bold tone to pop out through the white can also bring a dramatic effect without taking away too much from the overall feel of the space.”

5. Add well-placed pops of color

Bring visual interest to a neutral color scheme with judicious use of hues that draw the eye. “Our firm tends to design bedrooms in neutral color palettes, therefore we choose to bring in pops of color and texture with accessories,” says designer Charlotte Dunagan. “We love books, boxes and adding color and texture with throw rugs and draperies.”

6. Lighten up

Bathing a bedroom in natural light creates a warm glow that brightens and opens up the space. At night, however, light streaming in your bedroom windows isn’t as desirable.Get the best of both worlds by pairing sheer draperies with blackout shades that can be rolled down for a good night’s sleep without disturbance. You’ll need other light sources, too, depending on your particular desires. “If our client is a reader and ultimately reads in bed, lighting is exceptionally important,” designer Scott Sanders advises. “We encourage them to have tabletop reading lamps or reading wall lights, so they have the best light possible.”

7. (Re)make your bed

Your choice of bedding is absolutely essential. “A bedroom should have a comfy bed with a very good mattress and great luxurious sheets,” Sanders says. “You spend a third of your life in bed—make it the best you can!” Crisp white sheets are always a classic choice; add a duvet for another layer of luxurious softness and a quilted coverlet to incorporate some subtle color. For all of your bedding, invest in high-quality pieces with impeccable craftsmanship and fine fabrics. This type of bedding is durable and will hold up wonderfully over time.

8. Put your personal stamp on your surroundings

The bedroom is your retreat, so make it a space that is uniquely yours. Don’t overlook even the smallest details, as those are valuable opportunities to express yourself. “We believe that it’s the accessories that add warmth to any room and personalize it,” Dunagan says. “Our most favorite accessory is a beautiful vase with fresh flowers. Fresh flowers inspire an immediate mood lift. They bring softness and texture to a bedroom.” Other interior design tips for personalizing your space: a shelf of your favorite books, handsomely framed family photos or a work of art that speaks to your soul.
